Black Teen Detained By NYPD For getting An Expensive Belt
The new York Every day News is reporting this morning that an area teen is suing the NYPD and Barneys after he was handcuffed and detained for buying an costly belt that police officers could not consider a “younger, black male” like him may afford.
Trayon Christian, a “vogue-ahead” 19-12 months-outdated from Queens, was excited to spend his paycheck on a $350 Ferragamo belt he had been admiring, so he headed right down to Barneys’ flagship division store, debit card in hand.
But simply moments after leaving the shop together with his bought-and-paid-for accessory, Trayon was stopped by two undercover NYPD cops.
“They stated my card wasn’t real, it was faux. They mentioned somebody at Barneys referred to as to report it,” he instructed the Daily Information.
Trayon told the officers he had accomplished everything by the guide: Signed his name, confirmed the clerk his ID. But he was handcuffed and taken into custody just the same.
“I saved thinking, ‘Why is that this occurring to me ‘,” he recalled. “The detectives had been asking me, ‘How may you afford a belt like this The place did you get this cash from ‘”
In the lawsuit Trayon filed, the teen says he was in a holding cell for 2 hours earlier than being released with an apology.
A spokeswoman for the NYPD said Trayon was “held in police custody for approximately forty two minutes” and was launched “as quickly as we determined that the card was authentic.”
The exact duration of his detention issues little to Trayon, who says the April 29th incident left him offended.
“Why me I assume because I am a young black man, and you already know, people do a bank card scam so they most likely thought that I used to be one among them,” he instructed NBC New York.
